School attendance is one of the strongest indicators of pupil engagement, wellbeing, and long-term success. But effective monitoring is not about tracking static percentages, it is about recognising change early and responding with purpose.

Across the Trust, attendance is reviewed weekly to ensure clarity and precision. Rather than focusing solely on cumulative figures, we analyse week-on-week movement to identify pupils whose attendance has shifted. The question we ask is not, “What is their attendance?” but “Who needs our attention this week?”

We identify pupils whose attendance has dipped, improved, or moved between bands, including those entering or exiting Persistent or Severe Absence. This enables us to assess risk quickly, evaluate the impact of current strategies, and intervene before concerns become embedded.

Once a change is identified, we explore the context behind it. Absence codes are reviewed and patterns examined across days, lessons, and year groups. Attendance and punctuality are then considered alongside SEND status, disadvantage background, safeguarding involvement, and other relevant factors to ensure that any response is proportionate, targeted, and appropriate. Looking beyond the headline figure is crucial, patterns often reveal emerging barriers, whether linked to routine, curriculum, relationships, or wider circumstances.

This disciplined approach ensures weekly review is not a recording exercise, but a catalyst for timely conversations, targeted support, recognition of improvement, and early intervention.

Attendance is a shared responsibility. Teachers, pastoral teams, SENCOs, and senior leaders work together to ensure responses are consistent, proportionate, and impactful. Over time, this analysis also provides strategic insight, highlighting cohort trends, identifying gaps between groups, and evaluating the effectiveness of targeted support.

When attendance monitoring is focused, contextualised, and action-oriented, it becomes more than compliance. It becomes a driver of school improvement, turning data into dialogue, dialogue into action, and action into lasting impact for pupils and families.
